Meet Betsy, a very special sweet senior.
We can’t go into full details of her back story, but we can just tell you she’s been let down over and over again by humans in her life, even those she loved and who were supposed to be protecting her.
We first met her last summer and there was just something special about her. Even though we rarely have the ability to rescue larger dogs, we never forgot her. Recently when the opportunity arose to finally get her out of a bad situation we didn’t think, just went with our gut and took her before figuring out a plan for where she was going to go. Luckily, she’s an even more amazing dog than we even thought and we haven’t regretted our decision for a second.
Betsy is just a nice dog. Despite what she’s been through, a living situation that would have broken many dogs, she’s remained a nice dog. She’s the type of non-descript old-fashioned 50lb black shrunken shepherd-y type mixes we used to see all the time and reminds us of many dogs we have loved in the past. The type easily overlooked and who often fall through the cracks and become a shelter statistic.
She’s so grateful to be out of her previous situation and has been a perfect temporary houseguest so far. She loves having a soft clean bed, regular walks and time exploring a fenced yard, tennis balls and bully sticks to entertain her, and getting attention. She hasn’t batted an eye at the yappy little dogs who are wondering how we let this giant dog crash here, avoids conflict, and even tries to flirt and play with some of the younger male dogs. She’s been perfectly crate trained, listens well, knows some commands, and is just a good sweet gentle dog. We think she’s about 7-8 years old, recently sadly had yet another litter of puppies, most of which died, and her milk glands are still drying up. She will be spayed soon to make sure this was her last litter once and for all and looking for a permanent home that will love and appreciate just what an amazing hidden gem she is.
